Clifford Willis Farrow was born in Primrose Hill, London in 1898 (Hampstead Q2-1898 1A:602) son of Martin Willis and Mary Jane Winifred FARROW (née GUILLY).
1901 census...Aged 3, he was at 68 Langler Road, Willesden, with his father Martin W FARROW [30] ladies tailor, born Wickhambrook; his mother Mary J W [38] born Sheerness, Kent and his sister Kathleen W [6 months] born Kensal Green, London. 1911 census...Aged 13, he was at boarding school, Xaverian Brothers School, Pennybridge Mayfield (Sussex). His parents were at Cables Farm, Dullingham (father now a ladies tailor/farmer) with his sisters Kathleen and Eileen [3] and brothers John [7], Bernard [5] and Leonard [1]. All the new siblings were born in Brondesbury, London. |

The 3rd Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment was a Reserve battalion and never left England. The 4th Battalion arrived in Mesopotamia in February 1916,
joining the 42nd Indian Brigade. Until such times as his Army records are inspected (most are available at the National Archives in Kew), being wounded it is not possible to say where or when he was wounded. After the Australians took Ramleh in 1917, several Casualty Clearing Stations were posted there. According to his medal index card he was commissioned on 31st July 1917. Seemingly there is no record of when he arrived in Mesopotamia, but in any event his medals would be as shown. The card also confirms his father's address. |
